First, I want to say how much I appreciate the work you do here Mark. I have learned so much about community and group life.

I have to admit. I was excited about watching The Bible series. I was disappointed in some of the Biblical inaccuracies though: Noah, narrating the Creation story and the Fall of Man, the account of the Moses in Egypt–small details but details that are contrary to scripture, details that Mark Burnett took creative liberities on. My concern is that if people watch The Bible and see some of these inaccuracies, that will doubt the veracity, authenticity, authority and innerrancy of scripture. I even saw this post on FB (knowing though the relability of FB post, right?) which even caused for concern because this person highlights nonnegotiables of our faith:

FB post: It’s been brought to my attention, by a reliable source who conducted thorough research, that there are a number of unbiblical and very questionable things in “The Bible” television series–about the deity of Christ, the character of God, and the reality of sin (among other things).

Interested to here your thoughts here. Thank you and may God continue bless your ministry

Thanks for jumping in here! I definitely understand your concerns, but here’s what I think about it. Might there be some “creative license” in The Bible miniseries? No question. Will it create water cooler conversation? Absolutely. What will these conversations lead to? I think they lead to further conversation and more questions. Is that bad? I don’t think so. In fact, I think this turns out to have much more impact than we can imagine right now.

I’ve only seen part of the first episode. I don’t know what it will portray about the deity of Christ, but I will be surprised if it leaves anything in question. Always room for surprise and disappointment, but at this point, I am not expecting that.

One further note: We know that the ancient Hebrews were an oral culture. We believe that Noah lived long after Adam and Eve were dead and Moses wrote Genesis many, many generations later. Why be concerned about Noah telling I loved Noah telling the others on the ark the story of creation? Wouldn’t that be how one generation taught the next?

p.s. So glad you’re finding my posts helpful!
