Don’t Miss Mac Lake’s The Multiplication Effect

A couple weeks ago I wrote that Mac Lake is the go-to expert on building leadership pipelines for churches. I also recommended Leading Leaders and suggested you add it to your must-read list.

Well...I'm now working my way through Mac's latest book, The Multiplication Effect: Building a Leadership Pipeline that Solves Your Leadership Shortage, and I can tell you this is a must-read too!

Before I get too deep in a review of The Multiplication Effect, I want you to know the main reason I'm enjoying it so much is I know Mac as a practitioner. He's not a theorist. He writes about what he's already done and taught others to do. His work over the last several years has been instrumental in spreading the leadership pipeline concept as the way to think about solving leadership shortages.

The current church landscape reflects two efforts underway. The first is the effort to build a discipleship pathway. The second is to build a leadership development pathway. In The Multiplication Effect, Lake points out that "leadership development is simply the discipling of leaders" and "discipling leaders must become a defining mark of your church's culture."

The structure of The Multiplication Effect is very helpful. After building a solid biblical foundation for the leadership pipeline concept, there are extensive sections on:

  • building a leadership development culture
  • establishing an aligned leadership structure
  • designing a methodical system for moving leaders through the leadership pipeline
  • creating the training content for the development of leaders at every level of the leadership pipeline
  • learning how to identify, equip and empower leaders to develop leaders, and
  • deploying your plan in the context of real relationships

Stepping back to take a 30,000 foot look at The Multiplication Effect, it's easy to see this is the overview and Leading Leaders provides what you need to build the third section of the pipeline ((i.e., lead self, lead others, lead leaders, lead departments, lead the church).

If you're sensing the need to raise the bar on leadership development in your church, grab a copy of The Multiplication Effect and buckle up! There's quite a ride ahead!
